Calera student arrested for bringing gun to school

A Calera Middle School student was taken into custody Thursday after bringing a gun to school.

Shelby County Schools’ officials sent a message to parents notifying them of the incident.

“A weapon was found, and appropriate protocols were followed to ensure the safety of everyone present,’’ according to the message.

“The firearm was secured by law enforcement officials who are conduction an investigation into the matter.”

“Due to federal laws governing the privacy of students, we are not able to give any further specifics regarding this situation,’’ the message read.

“The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority and we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.”

Calera Police Chief David Hyche said officers recovered the gun and took the student into custody.

The student is awaiting formal charges, the chief said.

“Immediate law enforcement action is called for in situations like this to ensure the safety of students and staff,’’ Hyche said.

“Open conversations between parents and children about the dangers of firearms and the responsibilities that come with them can significantly impact safety,’’ the chief said. “Parents should stress with their kids the importance of reporting any suspicious behavior or items to school authorities.”

The chief said it’s also crucial for parents and guardians to secure guns at home to prevent children from getting access to them.
