Cafeteria TV keeping Marlon Humphrey humble

Cafeteria TV keeping Marlon Humphrey humble

Pro Football Focus says Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey has been the best player in single coverage in the NFL this season. Profootballreference.com stats show the former Hoover High School and Alabama standout has yielded 119 passing yards in four games in 2022.

Yet Baltimore has the worst pass defense in the NFL this season, yielding an average of 315.25 yards through the air per game, and now the Ravens’ secondary must face its nemesis, Joe Burrow.

The cafeteria will humble you,” Humphrey said. “You’ve got the Good Morning Football, NFL Network, Stephen A. (Smith). … It’s humbling to look up there and be like, ‘Dang, we got Marcus Peters — ballhawk. We got me, Marcus Williams –dog — Chuck (Clark), all these guys — great players.’ But we’re still trying to come together.

“To look up there and be eating lunch and see 32nd, you’re just like — it’s great to see, because I like to stay humble. But we’re still trying to jell together, and we really want to get that 32nd down. It’ll be a tough road, but I’m really excited for it, especially with this bunch coming in. We’ll definitely all have our hands full.”

The Ravens square off against the Cincinnati Bengals in an AFC North game on Sunday night.

In 2021, Burrow, the Bengals quarterback, threw for 941 in two games against Baltimore – the most passing yards by one player against a team in a single season in NFL history.

“What he does best, to me, other than most quarterbacks, is he just thinks, ‘My guy is better than yours,’” Humphrey said. “And whether you’re covered or not, it’s just like the ball is coming up and it’s there, and his guys come down with those passes a lot, honestly, so you’ve got to defend it.”

In the two games against Baltimore last season, Ja’Marr Chase had 15 receptions for 326 yards and two touchdowns, Tee Higgins had 19 receptions for 256 yards and two touchdowns and Tyler Boyd had seven receptions for 124 yards and one touchdown.

The same set of wide receivers could be on the field for Cincinnati on Sunday night. This season, Chase has 25 receptions for 293 yards and two touchdowns, Higgins 20 receptions for 315 yards and two touchdowns and Boyd 12 receptions for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

Higgins has an ankle injury, and his status for Sunday’s game is designated as questionable on Cincinnati’s injury report.

“It’s really tough,” Humphrey said. “They obviously have the best trio of wide receivers in the league. Joe Mixon — Pro Bowl running back. Joe Burrow — Pro Bowl quarterback. It’s tough. You’ve got to have a lot of different looks for them. You’ve got to mix in man coverage when you can. It’s really tough to man. A lot of teams don’t have the depth to be able to have three guys that can cover their three weapons. Then you’ve got (tight end) Hayden Hurst, who was here – a first-rounder. It’s really tough. …

“I know they’re 2-2, just like us, but I think both teams — even though they’re 2-2, feel like they could be 4-0, so it’s a really big matchup of two really good teams in the race for — the start for us to see who can get the lead in the division.”

The Ravens and Bengals square off at 7:20 p.m. CDT Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. NBC will televise the game.

The Bengals beat Baltimore 41-17 and 41-21 last season. The Ravens have lost their past five home games, and in its two losses in 2022, Baltimore has blown 14-point leads, including in the fourth quarter of a 42-38 setback against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 18 before falling to the Buffalo Bills 23-20 last week.

“We don’t really think about last year; we think about this year,” Humphrey said, “so we’ve lost two this year. We don’t want to make it three, so going forward we’ll try to get that streak ended. …

“We didn’t really talk about last week either. This is a new week. It’s Cincinnati Bengals week, so I’m excited to get to work on them.”
