Carnell Williams made a lifelong commitment to Auburn 21 years ago. The Plains introduced Williams to his wife, brought him a Sugar Bowl championship and turned the name ‘Cadillac’ into the state’s lore from his start at Etowah High.

On Monday, Williams’ bond with Auburn took on a new meaning as he was named interim head football coach. In the immediate aftermath of Bryan Harsin’s firing, the future of the Tigers is in the hands of a fan favorite. And though it’s been a “bittersweet” few days for Williams — he saw colleagues fired and earned a dream job as a result— the work doesn’t stop.

Starting with a trip this week to Mississippi State and a decent amount of heavy lifting needed on the recruiting trail, Williams is set for a busy month. Does he have a plan for the latter?

“Yes, sir. I do. I actually do. One of the things I definitely want to get out to recruits and the rest of the world: only at Auburn do dreams come true,” Williams said. ” …Every dream I wanted to accomplish, this place gave me the opportunity. Now for me to be in this position, I just want to get it out there: only at Auburn do dreams come true.”

The Tigers have 10 recruits in the 2023 class, ranked 56th in the 247Sports team composite. Shortly after Harsin’s dismissal was announced, three-star offensive lineman Gernorris Wilson reopened his recruitment as other prospects reacted on Twitter.

Williams noted how the responsibilities of his new role had altered his schedule. Perhaps none are more important than his efforts among high schoolers and junior college athletes. Williams is credited with securing junior running back Tank Bigsby in the 2020 cycle. Williams’ bonds with four-star Jeremiah Cobb and Clay Wedin were key in their pledges in the last few months.

While Harsin was questioned for the bonds or lack thereof, he had within the state, Williams is widely regarded as a hard worker and, as he put it, a “football junkie.”

“This place is dear to my heart, has done so much for my family and it’s changed my life in so many ways,” Williams said. “For me to have the opportunity to give back to Auburn in this position as a leader at times it’s heavy but lord knows I’m excited. … I’m ready to serve and give all I can.”
