C.J. Mosley eager to shut up New York Jets’ detractors

The New York Jets haven’t appeared in the NFL playoffs since the 2010 season, giving them the longest active postseason drought in the league. During those 12 seasons, the Jets have posted a winning record once.

Last season, when it looked as though New York might be playoff-bound at 7-4, the Jets lost their final six games.

But this offseason, Super Bowl talk has attached itself to the team, and it seems like more than wishful thinking because of the trade that brought quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.

The four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Award winner came in talking about adding to the Jets’ Super Bowl trophy case, which currently consists of the one from Super Bowl III, Joe Namath’s famous guarantee game.

For New York middle linebacker C.J. Mosley, it’s about time somebody else put the Super Bowl on the Jets’ radar.

“When I signed here, that was my goal and expectation,” Mosley said during New York’s offseason program. “I’m happy to hear him say that. I’m happy for more people to be talking about it because that’s why we’re here. I’ve been on this team long enough that y’all have heard me say this plenty of times: We’re here to win, we’re here to win championships and we’re here to be a great team for a long time, so with him being here, that just gives our opportunity a little bit more. It just goes up a little bit more. Nothing’s going to happen, nobody’s going to give anything to us, but to understand this small window, this opportunity that we have with the generational quarterback that we have right now.”

An 18-year NFL veteran, Rodgers made a difference as soon as he started work with the Jets this offseason, Mosley said.

“It’s a different vibe,” Mosley said. “He sets the bar. He sets the expectations with his resume, with his name and the way he approaches the game every single day. Just speaking as a linebacker and a defense, it’s not every day you get a chance to go against a future Hall of Fame quarterback and you get to test your skills, your knowledge and your ability every single day, so as a defensive player we’re honored and, obviously, really blessed just to be in this situation to try to grow as a better defense together and as a team.”

The addition of Rodgers should mean an end to the days of opponents “chalking up a ‘W’ when they saw the Jets on the schedule,” Mosley said.

“It’s just a bigger target on our back, and that’s exactly what we want,” Mosley said. “We want more people to give us everything that they have when we go into other people’s stadiums and hear every single thing they have to say so we can shut them up after the game is over. That’s what it’s going to take to win the Super Bowl. That’s what it’s going to take to grow as a team, be competitive and be able to win these tough games that we have coming in the future.”

Mosley received Pro Bowl recognition for the fifth time last season, when he recorded 158 tackles, which ranked ninth in the NFL. In 2021, the former Theodore High School and Alabama standout recorded 168 tackles, but the Jets yielded more points and more yards than any other defense in the NFL.

In 2022, the New York defense finished fourth in points and yards allowed per game in its second season under head coach Robert Saleh, who came to the Jets from serving as the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator.

“It’s never easy finishing in the top five, the top 10 in the league in defense,” Mosley said. “Think about it, a couple of years ago, we were one of the worst defenses, and it was a long, tough season. But through those tough losses, through those tough times, we learned a lot as a team, as a defense, and I know, for me personally, I learned a lot about my game, I learned a lot about our defense and how offenses attack it, and we take that into Year 3 now of all of us being together with this defense, it just brings more opportunity for us to keep growing.

“We can show different things because we trust each other. We can look at different things, we can try different things because we know the type of personnel that we have, we know the type of players that’s in our room on the defensive side and we just have that confidence. We’re just trying to keep building forward. And like I said, just having Rodgers on the other side testing us every single day, every single possession, every single down, every single drill that we do, that’s just making us better.”

The Jets are on their summer break and have not announced their dates for training camp. But New York and the Cleveland Browns will be the first teams to report for training camp next month.

That’s because the Jets and Browns will start the preseason one week earlier than the rest of the NFL. They’re scheduled to square off in the annual Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 3 in Canton, Ohio.
