By the numbers: Recapping the AHSAA 2023 state baseball finals
The 2023 AHSAA high school baseball season is officially complete.
Seven state champions were crowned at Jacksonville State’s Rudy Abbott Field in the tournament that began on Monday, finished on Friday and experienced plenty of delays due to weather.
Here is a By the Numbers look at what transpired in the second state baseball championships held at Jax State and Oxford..
5 – Sweeps in the best-of-three series. Only the Class 7A and Class 3A series went to three games. Both of those were completed on Thursday/early Friday.
1 – Home run at Jacksonville State this week. Ironically, it was hit by Gamecock signee Sam Silas of Holtville on the final day of the tournament.
2 – First time state champions (Appalachian in 1A and Ariton in 2A).
0 – Repeat champions. Central-Phenix City was the only 2022 state champion to make it back to the finals. The Red Devils lost in three games to Vestavia Hills.
22 – Year title drought ended by Vestavia Hills. The Rebels, who won nine titles from 1990-2000 under Hall of Fame coach Sammy Dunn, added a 10th state title in 2023.
12:21 – A.M. Time of the final pitch Friday morning in Vestavia Hills’ Game 3 win over Central-Phenix City. Game 3 started at 10 p.m. after the start of Game 2 was delayed by three hours due to rain.
16 – Combined runs scored in the seventh inning of two games by Appalachian in the Class 1A series. The Eagles scored eight runs in the seventh inning on Monday night in beating Brantley 18-3 in Game 1 at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park. Appalachian then scored eight more Tuesday at Jacksonville State, rallying from a 10-3 deficit for an 11-10, title-clinching win.
0 – Number of shutouts in 16 total tournament games.
1 – Hailstorm. It came Thursday afternoon between the end of the Class 3A series and the beginning of the 7A series at Jax State.
12 – Number of times Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline was played at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park and JSU’s Jim Case Stadium during the week. (Estimated)
1 – Number of times Dolly Parton’s 9-to-5 was played at Jacksonville State. (Not estimated. Hat tip to JSU sports information specialist Daniel Porter).
2 – State champions who were ranked No. 1 in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings (Oxford in 6A, Appalachian in 1A). Here is where the other state champions were ranked in the final poll — No. 8 Ariton in 2A, No. 8 Houston Academy in 3A, No. 10 Etowah in 4A, No. 10 Holtville in 5A, No. 4 Vestavia Hills in 7A).
