By the numbers: AHSAA softball state championships featured plenty of excitement

It took 108 games for seven champions to be crowned during last week’s AHSAA softball state championship tournament.

Playing for the love of competition, elite athletes displayed speed, finesse and power in a graceful show of organized chaos at Oxford’s Choccolocco Park and Jacksonville State’s Jana McGinnis Field.

The gallery here by AL.com photographers captured some of those instants of emotion and energy, allowing the remembrance of passion to linger long after the moment.

Below are some highlighted numbers from the tournament.

7 — Championships affected by rain. Every championship game either changed times or locations due to rain throughout the week with three title games moved to Jacksonville State. Class 2A and Class 5A games didn’t end until after midnight because of extended rain delays.

49-1 — Run differential by Orange Beach. The Makos dominated the tournament, winning its first three Class 4A games 18-0, 16-1 and 10-0 before beating Houston Academy 5-0 for the title.

4 — Pitching wins on final day. Brewbaker Tech’s Taniyah Brown earned Class 5A MVP after pitching four wins on Thursday, including two in the title games. She allowed only one earned run and struck out 12 in four games in addition to belting a 250-plus foot home run to help force the “if necessary” game.

0 — Repeat class champions. Although Orange Beach did win another title, the Makos earned the Class 2A championship last season and Class 4A this year. No other class champion from 2022 won a title.

2 — Best ASWA softball ranking to win title. Two No. 1 teams won championships, Class 6A Wetumpka and Class 3A Plainview, while teams ranked No. 2 won four titles. Ranked second were Class 7A Hewitt-Trussville, Class 5A Brewbaker Tech, Class 4A Orange Beach and Class 2A Hatton while Class 1A Brantley was ranked No. 3.

1 — New champions. Brewbaker Tech captured the Class 5A championship, the first in school history for softball after earning its first trip to the tournament last season.

42-47-13 — Combined line score for Class 2A championship games between Hatton and Wicksburg. Wicksburg won the first game 16-4 to force the “if necessary” game, which Hatton won 12-10 as the teams combined for 42 runs, 47 hits and 13 errors.

3 — Straight championships won by Orange Beach. It’s even more impressive considering the school only became eligible to compete for a title in 2021, winning Class 2A that season with a roster comprised mostly of seventh and eighth-graders and repeated in 2022. The Makos captured Class 4A this season with only one senior on the team.

2 — Teams dancing together. During an almost seven-hour rain delay, players from Class 5A Brewbaker Tech and Ardmore got together and danced for several minutes with an impressive display of impromptu choreography.
