Butler, Davidson outscore Hillcrest-Evergreen, 59-46

DJ Butler ran for four touchdowns and passed for another, accumulating 265 all-purpose yards as Davidson christened its new Warrior Stadium with a 59-46 victory over visiting Hillcrest-Evergreen Friday night.

“I was able to run a lot because of our wide receivers,” Butler said. “They really opened up everything for us. They were a really big key in helping us win.”

The Warriors improved to 1-0 and will begin 7A Region 1 play at Baker on Friday night, while the Jaguars (0-2) travel to Flomaton for a 3A Region 1 contest on Thursday night.

Butler had 265 all-purpose yards, rushing 19 times for 229 yards, throwing a 34-yard touchdown pass and had one return for 2 yards, while Hudson Spivey was 6-of-13 passing for 95 yards and 2 TDs.

Timothy Gray had 232 all-purpose yards for HIllcrest, rushing 22 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns and returning four kicks for 84 yards. Kevin Joseph Jr. ran 22 times for 194 yards and two scores, and Kevin Porter went 10-for-21 in the air for 120 yards and ran 10 times for 70 yards and a score.

“We were able to perfectly execute our plays,” Joseph said. “The line was really good.”

Butler scored on runs of 7, 32, 20 and 44 yards, while tossing a 34-yard scoring pass to Landen Robinson. Spivey connected with Anthony Rabb Jr. for a 41-yard score and Jaydrick Jowers on a 29-yard scoring toss. Terrance Gray ran for a TD, and Riley McGill booted a 33-yard field goal and was 8-for-8 on PATs.

For the Jaguars, Gray scored on runs of 7, 3 and 39 yards; Joseph on jaunts of 33 and 25 yards; and Porter on a 4-yard run and a 16-yard scoring toss to Omarius Northern. Joseph was also 4-of-5 on PAT attempts.

The Warriors had 21 first downs and accumulated 403 yards of total offense but were penalized 13 times for 85 yards. The visitors gained 33 first downs and collected 542 yards of total offense, rushing for 411 and passing for 131, while suffering 13 penalties for 114 yards in setbacks.
