Budweiser did do Super Bowl ad, and, yes, Clydesdales made brief appearance
There are a few certainties surrounding a Super Bowl: extravagant halftime show, a way-too-long pregame and the Budweiser Clydesdales.
It came as a surprise to many, though, that by the end of the lengthy broadcast, there was no Clydesdales sighting.
Or was there?
Well, the answer depends on your geographic location and just how quick of an eye you have.
There was a Budweiser commercial, as it turns out. The annual tradition had a couple of twists, though.
This year’s ad started out with a brief clip of the iconic horses but then pivoted to a “Six Degrees of Bud” concept. If you missed the opening of the spot, then you missed your Clydesdales.
If you saw the commercial on Sunday, then you were one of the lucky ones. That’s right, Anheuser-Busch, the beer brand’s parent company, chose to run the Budweiser spot specifically in 14 regional markets where they aimed to reach a younger audience, according to Variety.
“The Big Game will always have a role in our strategy,” Kristina Punwani, the executive who heads up marketing for Budweiser, said in an interview. “What we are trying to do this year is to be really, really smart and really tactical on hitting the consumer where they are at.”
Fear not, horse lovers, Punwani teases that the Clydesdales aren’t leaving the national stage forever.
“We will always have a role in this moment of culture. Consumers expect something of us and we want to make sure we deliver that, and do that to the right consumer bases.”
