Bucs bounce defending NFC champion Eagles out of playoffs

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns as the Buccaneers bounced the Philadelphia Eagles out of the NFC playoffs in a 32-9 decision on Monday night.

Philadelphia won the NFC championship last season and started the 2023 campaign by winning 10 of its first 11 games. But Monday night’s setback was the Eagles’ sixth loss in their past seven games.

Philadelphia imploded late in the third quarter while still down by seven points. On a third-and-6 snap from the Eagles 14-yard line, Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts retreated into the end zone under pressure from Tampa Bay and got called for intentional grounding, resulting in a safety with 2:18 left in the third quarter. Fifty-nine seconds later, Mayfield threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Trey Palmer as the Bucs stretched the lead to 25-9.

Philadelphia’s last gasp came when the Eagles took a field goal off the scoreboard because of a defensive-offside penalty to go for it on fourth-and-5 at the Tampa Bay 17-yard line. Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis spoiled the strategy by breaking up Hurts’ pass to wide receiver DeVonta Smith in the end zone.

Philadelphia went 0-of-2 on fourth down and 0-of-9 on third down as the Buccaneers held a 426-276 advantage in yardage. The Eagles ran for 201 yards when they defeated Tampa Bay 25-11 on Sept. 25, but, on Monday night, Philadelphia had 42 rushing yards.

Fourteen players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during the Philadelphia-Tampa Bay game:

· Eagles safety Reed Blankenship (West Limestone) was designated as a game-day inactive. A groin injury kept Blankenship out of the lineup.

· James Bradberry (Pleasant Grove, Samford) started at cornerback for the Eagles. Bradberry made three tackles.

· K.J. Britt (Auburn) started at linebacker for the Buccaneers. Britt made three tackles and broke up one pass. He also played a prominent part in keeping Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts out of the end zone when the Eagles used their Brotherly Shove play on a 2-point try after their touchdown.

· Zach Cunningham (Pinson Valley) started at linebacker for the Eagles. Cunningham made nine tackles and broke up two passes.

· Carlton Davis (Auburn) started at cornerback for the Buccaneers. Davis made four tackles and broke up two passes.

· Jamel Dean (Auburn) started at cornerback for the Buccaneers. Dean topped Tampa Bay as he equaled his career high with 10 tackles. He also recorded one tackle for loss and broke up one pass.

· Landon Dickerson (Alabama) started at left guard for the Eagles.

· Eagles offensive lineman Jack Driscoll (Auburn) did not record any stats.

· Jalen Hurts (Alabama) started at quarterback for the Eagles. Hurts completed 25-of-35 passes for 250 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions and ran once for 5 yards. Hurts threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Goedert as Philadelphia cut Tampa Bay’s lead to 16-9 with 3:06 left in the first half. Hurts played after dislocating the middle finger on his throwing hand in the Eagles’ previous game.

· Buccaneers cornerback Keenan Isaac (Midfield, Alabama State) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Josh Jobe (Alabama) did not record any stats.

· Buccaneers wide receiver Cephus Johnson III (Davidson, South Alabama) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Julio Jones (Foley, Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Eagles. Jones caught three passes for 22 yards before leaving in the first half to be evaluated for a concussion. Jones did not return to the game.

· Nicholas Morrow (Huntsville) started at linebacker for the Eagles. Morrow led Philadephia with 10 tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

· Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks (Alabama) made one tackle on special teams.

· DeVonta Smith (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Eagles. Smith had eight receptions for 148 yards, the second-highest total of his career. Smith’s receptions included a 55-yarder that set up Philadelphia’s only touchdown.

· Eagles offensive lineman Tyler Steen (Alabama) was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Buccaneers guard Logan Stenberg (James Clemens) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Eagles wide receiver Quez Watkins (Athens) had three receptions for 12 yards.

Philadelphia went 11-6 during the regular season but slid into a road game to open the playoffs with their post-Thanksgiving swoon. Tampa Bay won the NFC South at 9-8.

The Buccaneers play the Detroit Lions at 2 p.m. CDT Sunday at Ford Field in Detroit during the Divisional Weekend. NBC will televise the game.
