Buckhorn’s Caleb Holt named to USA basketball team

Buckhorn basketball star Caleb Holt has been named to the 2023 Under 16 National Team.

The team will compete in the eight-team FIBA U16 Americas Championship from June 5-11 in Merida, Mexico. The U.S. team is in Group A with Puerto Rico, Argentina and Mexico. The top four teams advance to the 2024 U17 Men’s World Cup in Turkey.

Holt, a rising sophomore, led Buckhorn to the Class 6A state championship earlier this year. He averaged 16.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the Bucks as a freshman.

He was the MVP of the Class 6A state tournament, scoring a combined 65 points and grabbing 32 rebounds in wins over McGill-Toolen and Mountain Brook. He also was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Class 6A Player of the Year.

“He’s an unbelievable talent, and the way the other players compete around him puts a strain on your team,” said Mountain Brook coach Tyler Davis after Holt scored 32 points and had 18 rebounds in the final against his team. “We tried to take him away, but he’s a generational talent. What can I say? That’s a Lebron James, Michael Jordan performance.”

Holt, a 6-foot-5 forward, already has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Houston and Ole Miss.

He is the only Alabama player on the team. He is joined by Cameron Boozer, Cayden Boozer, AJ Dybantsa, Isiah Harwell, JJ Mandaquit, Brandon McCoy, Jalen Montonati, Koa Peat, Darryn Peterson, Jayden Quaintance and Tyran Stokes. The team was chosen after seven days of training camp in Colorado Springs.

Sharman White of Pace Academy in Georgia is the head coach.
