Buckhorn rallies for fourth-quarter score to slip past Grissom
YaYa Landrum ran for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter as Class 6A playoff-bound Buckhorn beat 7A Grissom 17-13 on Thursday.
The host Bucks rallied after trailing 13-3 at halftime at Tommy R. Ledbetter Stadium in New Market to finish the regular season at 6-4.
Buckhorn got its points on a 35-yard field goal by Van Reid in the opening period, a 4-yard Israel Cooper run late in the third and Landrum’s 2-yard game-winner with 4:55 left in the game.
On the ensuing possession, Grissom started from the Buckhorn 45 and drove to the 7-yard-line with a minute left. But the Tigers fumbled, and Buckhorn’s Colton Rose recovered the loose ball. The Bucks ran out the clock and Grissom finished its year at 2-8.
Grissom scored in the first half on Donivon Padgett’s 5-yard run and Jalin Edwards’ 84-yard fumble return.
“Senior leadership. Our seniors just stepped up at halftime and challenged the rest of the team to come out and get the job done,” Buckhorn coach Matt Patterson said. “Our offensive line just kind of took over and we just fed Sharmarion (YaYa) Landrum. Six-and-four is the first winning season since 2015.”
Play of the game: With 5:18 left, Buckhorn’s Jack Rupe completed a 22-yard pass to Myles Anglin for a first down on the Grissom 2. Landrum scored on the next play to cap an eight-play, 85-yard drive.
“I was driving the ball down the field,” said Landrum, a junior running back, “and my team was down, so I had to get them back up. My two guards pulled for me, I saw the hole and I just hit it automatically.”
Stat sheet: Buckhorn – Landrum had 28 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown. Cooper, a freshman, had five carries for 15 yards and a touchdown. Rupe completed 9-of-16 passes for 73 yards with one interception. Middle linebacker JE Edwards made eight tackles. Cornerback Alex Gilray had one pass breakup and three assisted tackles. Grissom – Padgett had 11 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown and five catches for 32 yards. Seth Leebern completed 16-of-27 passes for 161 yards. Inside linebacker Alex Milan made 16 tackles.
