Buckhorn names former Bob Jones, Mae Jemison coordinator its next head coach

A Class 6A playoff team has found its next head football coach.

Buckhorn High School has tabbed David Green to lead its football program, the school announced on social media Friday. Green’s “X” page also confirmed that he will be the school’s next head coach

He will replace Matt Patterson, who stepped down as Buckhorn’s head coach after four seasons and three straight playoff appearances.

Green must still be approved by the Madison County School Board and be released from Madison City Schools where he is currently employed. Madison County’s next Board meeting is set for next Friday. Green could start work at Buckhorn April 7 if approved.

“He has been offered and accepted the job, and we are just waiting for all the boxes to be checked,” Madison County athletic administrator Matt Rogers told AL.com Friday. “But I’m excited about it. Buckhorn has been our most successful program in the system over the last few years, and we are looking forward to carrying on the success they’ve had and building on it.”

Green didn’t immediately return a direct message on “X.”

Green comes to Buckhorn after most recently spending time as the defensive coordinator at Bob Jones where he was hired ahead of the 2020 season.

He also spent time as the defensive coordinator at Mae Jemison, and also coached at Dothan and Helena. Green was named the 2017 Huntsville City Schools assistant coach of the year during his time as defensive coordinator at Mae Jemison.

Green played linebacker at Homewood High School.
