NFL Week 4 Saints vs. Buccaneers odds preview

After 2-0 starts, both the Bucs and Saints crashed back to the NFL Earth in Week 3. The Saints’ fall was worse, losing a 17-0 lead to the Packers in the fourth quarter and watching starting quarterback Derek Carr go down with a shoulder injury. If Carr can’t go Sunday, then the Saints will turn to former Bucs No. 1 pick Jameis Winston.

The Bucs were overmatched in a 25-11 Monday night loss to the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles. Aside from some incredible Mike Evans catches, the offense didn’t do much, with new starting quarterback Baker Mayfield sacked twice, throwing an interception, and finishing with 146 yards.

For the Saints, the issue has been an offensive line that has allowed 12 sacks through the first three games and a struggling running game. That running game should get a big lift this week with the return of Alvin Kamara who sat out the first three games because of an NFL suspension.

The Bucs have moved on from Tom Brady and are rebuilding under new coach Todd Bowles. Evans is still a prime target for Mayfield and rookie defensive back Christian Izien has made a big impact with two interceptions. A win for the Bucs would stamp them as the surprise team in the division.

Kickoff at the Caesars Superdome is noon CT. The host Saints are 3-point favorites.

NFL Week 4 Bucs vs. Saints best bet: Saints -3 (-110 at Caesars)

The first issue for the Saints will be how fast Carr is able to recover from his sprained AC joint in his shoulder. Saints head coach Dennis Allen called Carr “week to week” and didn’t rule out him playing on Sunday. It’s still unlikely. Winston was the Saints starter in 2022 before he suffered a serious back injury. He’s talented, but inconsistent.

But what the Saints have going for them is a dominant defense that has held opponents to fewer than 20 points in a franchise-record 11 straight games. The Saints currently rank 10th defensively against the run and eighth against the pass. Plus, the Saints have the ability to match up with Evans in the secondary with Pro Bowler Marshon Lattimore.

NFL Week 4 Bucs vs. Saints game prop: Special or Defensive Team TD (Yes, +190 at DraftKings)

This one is a bit off-the-beaten-track, but the Saints have a threat on special teams in Rashid Shaheed who ran back a punt for a touchdown in the loss to the Packers.

When these two teams met in the Superdome in the 2022 regular season, the Bucs returned an interception for a score and when they played in the Superdome in 2021 in the regular season, the Saints ran back a pick. With two quarterbacks who aren’t afraid to gamble (OK, be careless with the football) turnovers and defensive scores are possible.

NFL Week 4 Bucs vs. Saints best bet: Under 40.5 (-133 at Caesars)

Who’s scoring a lot of points in this one? The Bucs scored 20 against the Vikings, helped by three Viking turnovers, 27 against the woeful Bears, and just 11 against the Eagles. Tampa Bay doesn’t have many game-breakers on the offensive side of the ball.

The same can be said for the Saints. A bad offensive line manifests itself in a lot of different ways, but it makes long drives almost impossible. The Saints have yet to score more than two touchdowns in a game this season, and Winston has had issues with turnovers in the past (he infamously had 30 interceptions in 2019 with the Bucs). This one screams 14-10 or 9-7.
