Buccaneers sign former Alabama high school quarterback
Cephus Johnson caught three passes during his college career, but he’s getting a second chance in the NFL to make it as a wide receiver. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Sunday that they had signed the former Davidson High School and South Alabama quarterback.
Johnson signed with Minnesota Vikings shortly after going unselected in the 2023 NFL Draft. But after working in the offseason program and starting training camp with the Vikings, Johnson was waived on Monday.

For Davidson High School in Mobile in 2016, Johnson passed for 1,849 yards with 22 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Johnson became South Alabama’s starting quarterback in 2019, when he threw for 900 yards and five touchdowns and ran for 173 yards and four touchdowns in eight games before being replaced by Desmond Trotter.
Johnson continued to play quarterback after transferring to Southeastern Louisiana, but he also appeared at other positions over the next three seasons. With the Lions, Johnson threw for 1,449 yards and 11 touchdowns, ran for 797 yards and eight touchdowns and caught three passes for 22 yards.
