Bryce Young re-emerges as betting favorite to be taken No. 1 in 2023 NFL draft

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will announce the 2023 draft’s No. 1 overall pick two weeks from Thursday night in Kansas City, and momentum belongs to former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.

Sports-book odds have shifted this week in favor of Young being taken with the top pick after weeks of Ohio State’s CJ Stroud as the betting favorite. Young is now a -300 favorite on Caesars and FanDuel, with the latter telling ESPN that 81 percent of its money for the No. 1 pick this week was bet on Young.

If Young is drafted No. 1 overall, he would become the first Alabama player since Harry Gilmer in 1948 to be the top pick in an NFL draft. Joe Namath was the No. 1 pick in the American Football League draft in 1965, before the NFL began its common draft with the AFL two years later.

The Carolina Panthers, which traded with the Chicago Bears last month to own the No. 1 pick, had a heavy presence at both Young and Stroud’s pro days. The Panthers have already hosted Young and two other top quarterbacks, Will Levis and Anthony Richardson, on facility visits and will host Stroud next week.

While the Panthers have not publicly tipped their hand about who they will pick when the draft opens April 27, reporting in recent days has fueled the surge of bets on Young. NBC Sports’ Peter King reported earlier this month there were “several influential voices” within the Panthers favoring Young; ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported last week that Young “is the pick” for the Panthers; and ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested similarly Wednesday.

Since winning the Heisman Trophy in 2021, Young has been part of the conversation to be chosen No. 1 in the 2023 draft. He was the betting favorite as No. 1 overall in January, but the Panthers’ trade with the Bears swung the odds toward Stroud as many assumed new coach Frank Reich would continue to prefer a taller quarterback.

Stroud was commonly projected to the Panthers by major outlets in late March, including by ESPN’s Mel Kiper on March 21. But Kiper updated his mock draft Tuesday by placing Young at the top.
