Bryce Young keeping his draft floor while building

Teams evaluate the floor and ceiling for each prospect annually in the NFL Draft. For Bryce Young, the Carolina Panthers hope the ceiling is exceptionally high after trading into position to make the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner and former Alabama All-American the draft’s No. 1 pick on April 27.

But Young was considering his draft floor recently – literally.

Lowe’s took portions of the stage built for the 2023 NFL Draft at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, and had them made into keepsakes for 15 players who walked across the structure to shake hands with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after being selected in the first round this year. The recipients included Young and former Crimson Tide teammate Will Anderson Jr.

“Draft Day 2023 was one of the most incredible days of my life,” Young said in a release from Lowe’s. “Walking across the stage as the NFL’s first pick is something I will never forget. Huge thanks to Lowe’s for hand-picking a piece of the actual Draft Day stage that they helped build and sharing it with me. I’ll always be reminded of the very moment where my NFL dreams came true.”

As Young moved from the stage to the turf in the Panthers’ offseason program, he also pitched in near his new NFL home by working on a house being built by Habitat Charlotte Region in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Young has only just begun laying the foundation of his NFL career after completing the Panthers’ offseason program.

When Young joined Carolina, he slotted into the depth chart behind 12-year veteran Andy Dalton as the NFL team cleaned out last year’s quarterbacks room for a fresh start under new coach Frank Reich. But by the second week in June, Young was opening practice with the first-team offense.

But will that be the case when the Panthers hit the field for their first practice at training camp on July 26 at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina?

The countdown is on to see if Young will open his career as Carolina’s starter on Sept. 10 against the Atlanta Falcons.

“I think, for me, I try to focus on controlling what I can control,” Young said. “External expectations and pressure are things I can’t control.

“The expectations I set for myself are on my mind. I try to improve each day and get better. That’s what my focus is on. Those are the expectations I pay attention to.”
