Bryce Young gets to work as a second-team quarterback

Bryce Young completed rookie minicamp with the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. Now the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft moves from the centerpiece of practices to second-string quarterback in full-team workouts. But that doesn’t mean he won’t remain the focal point for the Panthers.

More than one month before drafting Young, the Panthers signed Andy Dalton to a two-year, $10 million contract as a free agent, and the 12-year veteran will begin post-draft practices as the No. 1 quarterback.

“Bryce will get a lot of reps,” Carolina coach Frank Reich said. “As we’ve said, when he’s ready, when it’s best for the team, that’s when we’ll look to make the transition. Right now, when we come back out on Monday, Andy will be taking the reps with the ones. Bryce will be with the twos.

“But Bryce is going to get a lot of reps, likely even get a few more than Andy, just as the new guy. And the good thing with Andy is he’s logged a lot in in the last couple of weeks, and as a savvy veteran, he still needs to work, but we’ll focus on getting Bryce, as the younger player, as many reps as we can.”

After watching the former Alabama All-American and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner work during the two days of rookie minicamp, Reich expects Young to continue to do well in full-team practices.

“I think he’s going to progress quickly in anything he does,” Reich said. “I think we all know that’s the kind of person he is, that’s the kind of player he is and how fast his mind thinks and how gifted he is physically. You can just see him thowing the football out there, how easy it is for him. A couple of us coaches were talking. We like to talk about low RPM mode, where it’s easy for him. You can see that.

“But it’ll pick up on Monday. Getting the vets out there, there will be challenges, there will be bumps and there will be ups and downs. But excited to get to work.”

The Panthers used the No. 1 selection on Young so that he could become a face-of-the franchise quarterback, not a second-stringer. But that has to be earned, Reich said, starting with Young’s new teammates.

“I think what you do on the field speaks so loudly that people don’t really hear what you’re saying,” Reich said. “And so you come in and you just be yourself and you really just put it out there on the field. No matter where you’re taking your reps, you make the most of every rep. And by the way you perform out there as a quarterback – every throw, every call – it doesn’t take long for the guys to say, ‘Oh, shoot, we got a guy. We got a guy.’ And that’s ultimately what players respond to the most. Does this player help us win football games? Can we count on this player in the clutch? Do we feel like when we walk in a stadium with this guy, do we have a better chance because he’s our guy? And that’s ultimately what you’re looking for.”
