Every drafted player gets a four-year contract, and those for first-round draft choices carry a team option for a fifth season. Teams must exercise that option before the player’s fourth season. The deadline for using the option for players in the 2020 draft was Tuesday.
Wills’ rookie deal was worth $19.703 million, and the fifth-year option will pay him $14.175 million for the 2024 season. While keeping Wills from becoming a free agent after the 2023 campaign, the Browns’ decision also guaranteed his salary for the 2024 season.
The fifth-year option payday is the average of the third through the 20th highest salaries for offensive linemen in the NFL over the past five seasons.
Since joining Cleveland, Wills has started all 45 regular-season games and two playoff contests in which he has played at left tackle. In 2022, Wills played in every game for the first time in his career and was on the field for all but 20 of the Browns’ 1,174 offensive snaps.
Wills spent three seasons at Alabama and was the Crimson Tide’s starting right tackle in 2018 and 2019. He earned All-SEC selection in 2019.
