Brothers jailed on capital murder charges in Bessemer killing; 3rd suspect sought

Two suspects are behind bars and a third remains at large in the shooting death of a Bessemer man.

Cameron Burroughs, 21, Colby Burroughs, 18 and Jakorrius Williams, 21, are charged with capital murder in the Wednesday slaying of 21-year-old Walterius Barnes.

The Burroughs brothers were booked into the Jefferson County Jail Friday afternoon. Authorities are still searching for Williams.

The gunfire erupted just after 3 p.m. in the 2900 block of Fairfax Avenue. More than two dozen shots were fired.

Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons said Barnes was shot while driving a car. That car then crashed into a house.

Barnes was taken to UAB Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m.

Barnes is Bessemer’s first homicide of 2023. A motive has not yet been determined.
