A young Birmingham City Schools student died over the weekend following an August traffic crash, and his older brother has been charged in connection with the death.

Junior Ulloa, 11, died Saturday at Children’s of Alabama, according to Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans.

His brother, 20-year-old Eldin Ulloa, was booked into the Shelby County Jail Tuesday where he remains held without bond.

Junior was critically injured in a wreck that happened about 8:10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, in Alabaster.

Authorities said Ulloa was driving a vehicle with Junior and multiple other young siblings as occupants when he ran a stop sign and was t-boned by an oncoming vehicle.

Charging documents state Ulloa was driving 82 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone.

Ulloa is charged with reckless murder in Junior’s death, according to court records made public Wednesday.

He is also charged with one count of reckless endangerment, one count of first-degree assault, and three counts of third-degree assault in connection with injuries sustained by his surviving siblings.

All of Ulloa’s passengers were injured, one of them severely, according to court records.

Junior had attended Birmingham’s Washington K-8 school. School officials said support has been provided for his classmates and friends at the school.
