Bronny James entering NBA draft in addition to portal

Bronny James has declared for the 2024 NBA draft in addition to entering the NCAA transfer portal, he announced on Friday.

James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, averaged 4.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game as a freshman at USC this past season. The 6-foot-4 guard missed the first eight games of the season after suffering a heart-related incident during summer workouts, but averaged 19.4 minutes in the 25 games he did play.

NBA draft rules allow players to maintain their college eligibility after declaring for the draft, provided they do not sign with an agent. Should James be unhappy with draft projections, he can withdraw from consideration and return to college.

James’ draft decision is interesting given his father’s pending free agency. The elder James — now 39 and finishing up his 21st NBA season — has in the past expressed a desire to play alongside his son, and a team could draft Bronny James and then try to sign LeBron.

The deadline for players to withdraw from the NBA draft is June 16. The draft is set for June 26-27 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

A McDonald’s All-American in 2023 at Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles, Bronny James was rated the No. 19 overall recruit in the 2023 class by ESPN.com.
