Broken facemask leads to Bama-for-Bama substitution

Broken facemask leads to Bama-for-Bama substitution

The Philadelphia Eagles ran into a problem on their opening possession against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

It didn’t have anything to do with quarterback Jalen Hurts, whose status for the game had been listed as questionable and who flew to Seattle apart from his teammates because of illness.

But Hurts was in the starting lineup. It was another former Alabama standout who had to leave the game. And it was yet another Crimson Tide alumnus who came into the game.

After the fifth snap of the game, Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson ran off the field with the facemask barely hanging on his helmet.

Rookie Tyler Steen took Dickerson’s spot in Philadelphia’s offensive line while the starter’s equipment was repaired.

By the time the Eagles completed the 15-play, 75-yard drive with a touchdown, Dickerson had returned to the lineup.

Hurts hardly looked sick on the opening series as he completed all five of his passes, started the possession with a 13-yard run and ended it with a 3-yard run to the end zone.

With 13 rushing touchdown this season, Hurts has the second-most for a quarterback in one season in NFL history, matching his total of last season. Former Auburn All-American Cam Newton set the NFL single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 14 for the Carolina Panthers in 2011.
