Britt treated for sudden facial numbness, says condition non-life-threatening

Sen. Katie Britt was admitted to the hospital over the weekend after she suffered sudden facial numbness while with her family in Montgomery, the senator said Monday.

Britt, who is now recovering at home, said the condition is “not life-threatening” and recovery “could take several weeks.”

Alabama’s junior senator said doctors at Baptist Medical Center South “determined that my symptoms were a result of swelling of a facial nerve, most likely caused by a post-viral infection.”

A specialist at UAB looked at Britt as an outpatient “and concurred with the prognosis and course of treatment,” she said.

“I am grateful for the medical professionals providing excellent care, and my family and I are deeply grateful for your prayers,” Britt said.

The senator, 41, is Alabama’s first woman elected U.S. senator and the upper chamber’s youngest active female member.
