Britt: Dems ‘more interested in scaring women’ by blocking child support bill
Senate Democrats are “more interested in scaring women and families” after they blocked a bill Tuesday that would allow women to receive child support payments during pregnancy, among other provisions, according to Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., who is among the bill’s co-sponsors.
The More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed, or MOMS Act, sponsored by Britt and Republican Sens. James Lankford of Oklahoma, Marco Rubio of Florida and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, also would have created Pregnancy.gov, a government website that would have listed adoption resources and pregnancy crisis centers. Those nonprofit centers offer free pregnancy tests and supplies for pregnant women. Critics have said they provide inaccurate medical information to dissuade women from seeking abortions.
Democratic influencers on social media claimed Pregnancy.gov would create a federal database of pregnant women. Britt earlier called the claims “flagrantly false.”
On the Senate floor Tuesday, shortly before Democrats blocked the MOMS Act from advancing in the upper chamber, Britt said she couldn’t “quite wrap my head around” why Democrats trumpeted the “absurdly false” claims.
“In my 18 months in this body, I probably have never been more disappointed,” she said. “I understand that we come from different perspectives, but to create outlandishly false and absurd things about this bill was truly a bridge too far.”
The bill, which would also allow women to receive child support payments during pregnancy if the mother requests it, was among the reasons Britt said she believed the GOP is “the party of families.”
“What you’re going to hear after I make my motion to pass the MOMS Act will be very telling about whether Democrats can say the same thing of their party,” she said.
“They’re about to answer [this] question: are they more interested in scaring women and families or helping women and families?” Britt said. “Personally, I’m proud to support women throughout the seasons of motherhood, and I’m honored to lead this pro-life, pro-woman, pro-family legislation.”
