Britt ambushed by climate activist, dismisses ‘dishonest’ claim ‘Big Oil’ funds her
Under the guise of wanting a selfie, a youth activist with a climate change group confronted Sen. Katie Britt in Washington, D.C. on Monday, accusing Alabama’s senior senator of being bankrolled by “Big Oil.”
Britt, a Republican, dismissed the activist’s claim as “dishonest.”
“I was wondering how much money it would take to buy you back from Big Oil,” the youth activist with Sunrise Movement asked Britt in a video posted to the organization’s account on X:
According to Open Secrets, Britt received more than $171,000 from the oil and gas industry in 2022, when she was campaigning for U.S. Senate. The nonprofit’s data showed Britt received more money from 12 other industries.
“From Big Oil? Look at how dishonest that was. You ask if you could take a selfie and now you’re asking questions,” Britt tells the activist as she heads toward an elevator.
“And tell me, what is it … What do you think about Big Oil … tell me about that,” Britt continues.
“I think that the climate crisis is here and is getting worse, and you’re being funded by the people who are making that happen,” the activist says.
“Listen, we’ve got to be not only energy independent but energy dominant,” Britt says as the elevator door shuts. “We do it better than anybody.”
The senator’s office could not be reached for further comment.
