Brighton city councilman accused of leaking video of double murder to media

A Brighton city councilman is under arrest, accused of leaking video of a double murder to some news media outlets in the middle of the investigation.

Jerome Edward McMullin Jr., 54, is charged with obstruction of governmental operations and tampering with physical evidence.

He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 10:04 a.m. Monday and released at 11:37 a.m. after posting $2,000 bond.

McMullin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The deadly shooting happened Friday, Dec. 13, 2024, during a funeral repass at the Brighton Community Center.

Authorities were called to the center at 3810 7th Ave. shortly before 2:30 p.m. that Friday.

James David Abercrombie III, a 27-year-old Fairfield man who just got out of prison in October 2024, is charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of D’Angelo Le’Marcus Samuel, also known as rapper Landlord Lo, 27, and 38-year-old Roderick Hall, who was Abercrombie’s uncle.

Samuel, Hall, and Hall’s brother were standing just outside the front door when the shooting happened.

Samuel and Hall were pronounced dead under the awning at the community center’s entrance. Hall’s brother was not injured.

The repass was for Samuel’s uncle.

Video of the killing was quickly leaked and showed the suspect shooting the victims from just feet away before running through the community center parking lot, still armed with the rifle.

Charging documents against McMullin state he “illegally made a video of a double homicide taken from a security camera at the City of Brighton Senior Citizens Center on his personal cell phone and released it to the news media while during an active investigation inside a taped off crime scene.”

The charges were brought by Brighton Police Chief Larry Woods.

“During the investigation before the Coroner arrived the actual event caught on camera was released to the media,” Woods said in a Tuesday statement. “This was video that shouldn’t be released to the public because an active investigation was going on by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department that could be detrimental for apprehension of the suspects and conviction.”
