Brawl on the gridiron forces end to high school football game
Sportsmanship went afoul between high school football players in Southeast Alabama when a fight broke out on the field and ended the game.
The match between Headland High School and Pike County High Friday night in Brundidge collapsed during the second quarter when a Headland player tackled a Pike County receiver, according to news reports.
The Pike County player that was tackled during play appeared to collapse on the sidelines and was taken off the field by Pike County coaching staff members, WTVY reported. The receiver who was hurt appeared to be alert, Pike County principal Jeff Torrence told the Dothan Eagle newspaper.
Tensions among the Headland Rams and the Pike County Bulldogs boiled over after Pike County protested the hit as hard and unnecessary. That then led pushing and shoving, which resulted in several unsportsmanlike penalties.
The teams attempted to restart the game, but that ended when an actual fight began. Police took to the field and officials ended the game before the half.
At least six flags were seen on the field after coaches and officials were able to break up the fight, according to the Dothan Eagle.
Headland will be awarded the victory in the game by way of forfeit with a score of 20-0, Ron Ingram, Alabama High School Athletic Association director of communications, told WTVY.
