Braves salute Hank Aaron with new uniforms
The Atlanta Braves unveiled new uniforms on Monday that pay homage to the franchise’s greatest player – Mobile native Hank Aaron.
The City Connect uniforms are modeled on the outfits worn by the Braves in 1974, when Aaron became baseball’s career home run leader. Atlanta will wear the uniforms for the first time in a game against the San Diego Padres on April 8, the 49th anniversary of Aaron’s 715th home run, which broke Babe Ruth’s long-standing record for four-baggers.
“The Atlanta Braves are proud to honor Hank Aaron with our City Connect uniforms,” said Derek Schiller, the National League team’s president and CEO, in a release from the team. “We are thankful to Nike, who collaborated with us on the designs as we recognized the impact that Hank continues to have on our organization while also celebrating the role of the Braves in our community.”
Features of the new jerseys include a 715 on the inside collar reminiscent of the way it appeared on the Atlanta Stadium scoreboard on April 8, 1974. Aaron’s motto of “Keep swinging” and his jersey number of 44 are embroidered on the jersey and under the bill of the cap. The feather on the sleeves of the 1974 jerseys has been replaced by the peak of a crown as a tribute to the Home Run King and features a ribbing pattern that mirrors the Presidential Medal of Freedom that Aaron received from George W. Bush.
The Braves, along with the Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers, are joining Major League Baseball’s City Connect program in its third season. The uniforms are meant to draw inspiration from the home cities of their teams for their design.
Atlanta will wear its City Connect uniforms for every Saturday home game this season.
