Brandon Miller has 18 points, 7 fouls in his pro debut

In his first pro action, former Alabama All-American Brandon Miller filled up the stat sheet for the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night – not always in a good way.

Playing for Charlotte’s Summer League team in the California Classic in Sacramento, Miller scored 18 points as he made 5-of-11 shots, including a 3-of-7 showing on 3-pointers, and 5-of-7 free throws during the Hornets’ 98-77 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

In 33:40 on the court, Miller also had five rebounds, three assists, one steal, one blocked shot, six turnovers and seven fouls. (Under California Classic rules, a player needs 10 fouls to be disqualified.)

Miller seemed to catch on to the NBA game as Monday night’s contest went along. He committed six of his fouls in the first half, and he made all four of his shots in the fourth quarter, including his three 3-point buckets.

Miller joined Charlotte as the second player picked in the NBA Draft on June 22.

In the same game on Monday night, Charles Bediako, a Crimson Tide teammate of Miller’s, also made his pro debut. Bediako signed with the Spurs as a rookie free agent.

In 12:16 on the court, Bediako had five points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal, three turnovers and five fouls.

The California Classic is a six-team, two-day session hosted by the Sacramento Kings as a warmup for the NBA 2K24 Summer League, which includes all 30 of the league’s teams and starts on Friday in Las Vegas.

The California Classic concludes on Wednesday, when the Hornets play the Golden State Warriors at 5 p.m. CDT, the Spurs play the Los Angeles Lakers at 7 p.m. and the Kings play the Miami Heat at 9 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the opening game, and ESPN will televise the next two.
