Bradley Bozeman on Bryce Young: ‘Just pure confidence’

When Carolina opens its 2023 season against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 10, rookie Bryce Young is expected to start at quarterback for the Panthers, joining the line of Alabama QBs holding No. 1 jobs in the NFL.

Young follows Jalen Hurts with the Philadelphia Eagles, Tua Tagovailoa with the Miami Dolphins and Mac Jones with the New England Patriots.

Unlike those quarterbacks, Young entered the NFL as the No. 1 pick in the draft. He’s also the only one who’ll be taking snaps from another Crimson Tide alumnus.

Carolina center Bradley Bozeman said he’d been impressed with Young “from the very jump.”

“As a rookie coming in, there’s a lot going on, a lot being thrown at you,” Bozeman said. “There’s a lot of playbook, and he comes in, coach gives him the call, he turns around, looks at us, just pure confidence and rattles off the call right back to us. And I was like, ‘OK, let’s see how this goes the rest of this day.’ And the whole rest of the week, he just crushed it from the beginning.

“I mean he’s come in and just absolutely dominated this role that he’s been in. Everything he’s been asked to do, everything that’s been put on his plate, he’s stepped up to the plate to it. He’s done a great job managing it, staying confident, and whenever mistakes happen, just moving on to the next play.”

Bozeman disagreed with an assessment that Young is soft-spoken.

“Even-keeled and confident is everything that I get from him,” Bozeman said. “When he steps in the huddle, everybody shuts up and listens. That tells you a lot. There’s a lot of huddles I’ve been in where people are still talking in side conversations about the play that happened before. Whenever he steps in, it’s silent. That tells you a lot of what you need to know.”

The Panthers have been working in training camp at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. But on Wednesday night, Carolina came to its home field of Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, for its annual Fan Fest practice. With the Panthers in pads and some 11-on-11, starters-versus-starters drills included, the workout looked a little like a dress rehearsal at times.

“Kind of working out some kinks, getting all the communication going,” Bozeman said. “Really, whenever you start game-planning, that’s when you really start flowing on that, and we’re just working through those right now. We have our base rules right now. Keeping it pretty vanilla right now. We’ll definitely be picking that up. I think (Young) operated it very well today.”

Before Carolina gets to the Falcons for an NFC South game on Sept. 10, the Panthers have preseason contests against the New York Jets on Aug. 12, New York Giants on Aug. 18 and Detroit Lions on Aug. 25.

“It’s been a great, great start,” Bozeman said about working with Young. “Excited to see the things to come.”
