Bracketology: Where Alabama’s men’s basketball team stands ahead of the SEC tourney

It’s the bubble-watch season for NCAA Tournament hopefuls and posturing time for March Madness’ projected No. 1 seeds. No. 4 Alabama is squarely among the latter as it heads into this week’s conference tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

The Crimson Tide posted a 26-5 record with a 16-2 showing in the Southeastern Conference, earning at one point the highest ranking in program history and a double-bye in the playoffs. Even with a few close games to lesser opponents, and a loss at Texas A&M, all the major bracketologists project Alabama to remain a one-seed by Selection Sunday.

Per T-Rank’s Teamcast, the Tide has the seventh-best overall resume in the country and second among one-seeds when considering opponent quality and NET rankings. It has nine Quadrant 1 wins — a victory at home against a top-30 team or a road win against a top-75 team — with only Kentucky (15) having more.

Alabama is third in Ken Pomeroy’s rating system, ranking third in adjusted defensive efficiency and 23rd in adjusted offensive efficiency. Nate Oats and co. have a few more chances to earn a few more standout wins this week, potentially getting to Tennessee, Texas A&M or Kentucky en route to a conference title. Still, the question can be asked if Alabama even needs a win to retain its No. 1 seed?

Here are the latest NCAA Tournament projections as of Tuesday morning:

–ESPN’s Joe Lunardi as Alabama as the No. 1 seed in the South region, playing its games in Birmingham for the first two rounds. Per Lunardi’s picks, the Tide would play Horizon League’s Cleveland State in the March Madness opener and the winner of Illinois-Virginia in the round of 32.

The Athletic agrees with Lunardi, similarly putting the Tide in Legacy Arena against Cleveland State. In this bracket, Alabama would play the winner of West Virginia and Providence before heading to the Louisville regional round.

SB Nation gave the Tide a matchup against 16-seed UNC-Asheville, the winner of the Big South Conference for the first round. Its second-round matchup would be between Conference-USA champ Florida Atlantic and Penny Hardaway’s Memphis.

RealTimeRPI.com puts the Tide as the No. 1-overall seed over Kansas, Houston and San Diego State. It would play the winner of Grambling State-Norfolk State in the first round and either Creighton or VCU in the second round.

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm put the Tide as the No. 1 seed also playing a First Four team, this time either Farleigh Dickinson or Alcorn State. In the round of 32, Alabama could face North Carolina State or Illinois.

Bally Sports put the Tide at No. 2 overall behind Kansas and ahead of Houston and Purdue.
