Boys tournament area roundup: Cullman tops Hartselle in 4 OT
Second-seeded and eighth-ranked Cullman held off top-seeded Hartselle 72-70 in four overtimes to claim the Area 14 tournament title on Thursday at Hartselle.
The teams traded the lead throughout regulation, with Cullman leading 21-15 after one quarter, Hartselle holding a 32-26 edge at halftime and Cullman up 46-37 headed into the final quarter.
Regulation ended at 55-all. The two teams scored 4 points apiece in the first overtime, 3 points each in the second OT and 6 points apiece in the third extra period (68-68).
Tucker Cagle led the winners with 27 points. Garrison Sharpe scored 13 for the Bearcats (25-5).
Kiah Key and Ryan Dunn scored 21 points apiece for Hartselle. Rylan Smothers tossed in 13 for the Tigers.

Mountain Brook 73, Woodlawn 51: Area 10 top-seed and second-ranked Mountain Brook advanced to the area title game against Shades Valley on Saturday with the win.
Ty Davis recorded a double-double for the Spartans (21-7) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Julius Clark scored 17 – on 5-of-7 shooting – with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. John Colvin added 10 points for the winners.
Second-seeded Shades Valley edged Pell City 47-46 in the other area tournament opener.
McGill-Toolen 63, Spanish Fort 41: No. 3-ranked McGill-Toolen won the Area 2 tournament Thursday night with the win over visiting Spanish Fort.
All-tournament selection Devin McCaine scored 17 points, while tournament MVP Bennett Russ and all-tournament selection Jack Murphy each scored 10 each.
The Jackets, which led 12-9 after the first quarter, outscored the Toros 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 33-17 halftime lead, thanks, in large part, to Ray Andrews. The senior scored 9 first-half points on his 18th birthday.
“Proud of our guys,” McGill-Toolen coach Phillip Murphy said. “Spanish Fort is well coached and plays hard. Ninth area championship game in the last 13. We will take it. Got to keep working.”
McGill took a 52-31 lead into the fourth quarter when Alex Heim, who finished with 6 assists and 5 rebounds, added 4 points.
Russ finished with 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Tristen Brower added 8 points in the win.
McGill-Toolen (26-6), winners of 16 straight, will host the 6A Area 1 runner-up on Tuesday in the sub-state round.
Tyler Wigley had 15 points for the Toros, who travel next week to play the Class 6A Area 1 winner.

Vigor 50, Faith Academy 45: The Wolves moved into the Area 2 tournament title game with the hard-fought win on at home on Thursday. Vigor trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter.
Terrell Johnson led Vigor with 15 points. Albert Holcombe pitched in 12 points for the winners.
Devon Carter scored 15 for the Rams and Labarron Hunter added 11.
Williamson 54, B.C. Rain 35: The Lions topped cross-town rival B.C. Rain for the Area 1 tournament title on Thursday.
Senior guard Robert Brown poured in 21 points, dished out 7 assists and made 3 steals in the win. Mikel Bonner registered a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

UMS-Wright 68, Orange Beach 43: Bridges Simmons scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half and he had 6 assists as the top-seeded Bulldogs captured the Area 1 tournament title.
The tournament hosts raced to a 19-12 first-quarter lead and were up 35-16 at the half. UMS-Wright carried a 50-31 edge into the final quarter.
The Bulldogs hit 12 3-pointers on the night with seven players connecting from deep. Finlay Lavelle scored 11 points and Joe Lott added 9.
Simmons was named tournament MVP with Lavelle and Lott earning all-tournament honors.
UMS-Wright (20-11) will host the Area 2 runner-up, Escambia County, on Tuesday in the subregional round of the playoffs.
