Boys area tournament roundup: Austin rolls over Florence
Top-seeded Austin rolled over Florence 90-58 in the opening round of the Class 7A Area 8 contest on Wednesday at Austin in Decatur. The eighth-ranked Black Bears had three players in double figures, including Jordan Johnson’s double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Austin will play Bob Jones in the area title game on Friday at 7 p.m. The Patriots beat intracity rival James Clemens 43-40 in the other tournament game.
Caleb Fletcher led Austin with 23 points. Fletcher also grabbed 6 rebounds. Cam Collins scored 15 points, claimed 6 rebounds and dished out 5 assists.
In other boys’ basketball action on Wednesday:
Hoover 67, Tuscaloosa County 60: The second-ranked and second-seeded Bucs won the back-and-forth contest on Wednesday at Vestavia Hills in the Area 5 tournament.
Tuscaloosa County led 9-8 after a slow-starting first quarter before Hoover pulled to a 30-27 halftime advantage. The Wildcats clawed back to lead 46-43 headed into the final period. Hoover (27-3) hit 9-of-11 free throws down the stretch on the way to a 24-14 fourth-quarter margin.
DeWayne Brown led Hoover with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Salim London scored 15 points and had 4 assists in the win. Jarrett Fairley added 10 points for the Bucs. Jonathan Caicedo grabbed 5 rebounds to go with his 8 points and Elijah Herron hit a pair of 3-pointers for his 6 points in the second half to extend Hoover’s lead late in the game.
Hoover plays Vestavia Hills at 6 p.m. on Friday for the area title.
Vestavia Hills 56, Thompson 46: The No. 1 Rebels knocked off Thompson on Wednesday in the Area 5 tournament at Vestavia Hills. The Rebels will face rival Hoover for the area crown on Friday at 6 p.m.
Jackson Weaver led Vestavia (24-4) with 18 points. Win Miller added 16 in the win.
Oak Mountain 72, Chelsea 58: Matthew Heiberger keyed a strong fourth quarter in leading Oak Mountain to the Area 6 semifinal victory. Heiberger scored 13 of his game-high 35 points in the final period as the Eagles trailed 41-39 at the end of the third, but outscored Chelsea 33-17 for the win.
Alabama baseball commitment Heiberger also grabbed 9 rebounds, recorded four steals and handed out two assists.
“He’s a gamer when the game is on the line,” said Oak Mountain coach Joel Floyd. “He gets it done. He’s just decided he wants to get things done and goes out and makes plays.”
Chelsea took the third-quarter lead when senior guard Dylan Brown connected on a 3-pointer from the corner then stole the ball and was fouled as he laid it in. Brown’s ensuing free throw completed his 6-point run to give the Hornets the 41-39 lead. Teammate Paul Lanzi chipped in 7 points in the quarter.
Heiberger started the comeback with a steal that ended with his fourth dunk of the game.
The Eagles also converted 22-of-27 free throws to take control of the game.
“It was the area battle we knew it would be,” Floyd said. “We’ve found a way, these last six or seven games, to be really good in the fourth quarter and I was really proud of my guys for continuing that.”
Host Oak Mountain will play Spain Park on Friday for the area title.
Kevin Jasinski scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Eagles. Grey Williams added 8 points while Tre Thomas had 8 blocked shots to go with his 7 points.

Fairhope 58, Daphne 55: Fourth-ranked Fairhope beat rival Daphne for the third time this year to win the Area 2 championship on Wednesday at Fairhope.
Spence Sims led the way for the Pirates with 25 points, breaking the 1,000-point plateau for his career.
McRae Taul followed with 10 points and Zeb Garrod had 9.
Fairhope improved to 25-2 heading into region play.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 58, Central-Tuscaloosa 47: The Patriots earned the Area 6 tournament win at Paul Bryant High School on Wednesday.
Hillcrest got double-figures scoring from three players, led by Shah Hall with 23 points. Osa Alohan scored 14 and Jakari Andrews added 10 in the win.
Javion Taylor led Central (16-12) by pouring in 27 points. Jaydon White scored 10 for the Falcons.
Hillcrest will play the winner of the Paul Bryant-Northridge game on Friday at 7 p.m. for the area title.
Pelham 59, Briarwood Christian 49: The Panthers rallied from a 32-25 halftime deficit – Pelham trailed 20-10 after one quarter – to pick up the win in Area 8 play on Wednesday. The Panthers took charge with a 21-7 third quarter.
Pelham plays No. 1 seed Helena at 6:30 p.m. on Friday for the area title.
Joe Wimberly, Kamari Hollis and Dynarian Long scored 11 points apiece to lead Pelham. Corey Perkins scored 10 in the win.

Julian Whitfield led the winners with 18 points. Kaden Adams recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Paul Jones scored 12 points – all in the second half – and Jaylen Vaughn grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his 6 points.
Jayden Rutledge and Javon Chism scored 10 points apiece for Montevallo.
