Booming Village of Providence: Residents voice concerns about problems created by growth

Business is booming both literally and figuratively in the Village of Providence these days.

And some residents aren’t entirely happy about that.

A total of 61 single family homes were platted in 2022, with 17 homes receiving permits. And there’s more on the way. The Huntsville Planning Commission last year approved the construction of three more phases of the development with almost 190 lots.

And the growth is not just limited to single family homes. Five apartment communities with almost 1,000 units are under construction.

While residents such as Angela Somerset and Chris Horn said they favor development, they believe the growth is creating a myriad of problems ranging from blasting caused by the laying of a sewer line, to roads needing repairs to traffic problems caused by the construction of apartments.

“My concern is that the city is being more reactive than proactive,” Somerset said at a District 5 town hall meeting at Providence Elementary School last week. “Let me give you an example, when cities design infrastructure, it is a hope that all of these things are foreseen before they happen so that the existing neighbors’ properties are not disturbed.”
