Booger McFarland ranks CFP teams, but where he has Alabama might surprise you
Booger McFarland has been one of the more vocal proponents for Florida State making the College Football Playoff. In fact, he said he would go to his grave defending the stance that the Seminoles should have been in over Alabama.
Which makes his comments to Greg McElroy on “Always College Football” all the more interesting.
Alabama jumped from No. 8 to No. 4 after defeated No. 1 Georgia 27-24 in the SEC Championship Game, while undefeated ACC champ Florida State was left out.
Based on the eye test and the talent on the roster, the former LSU standout ranked the CFP’s four teams.
“I think Texas is one,” he said. “I think Alabama is two. I think Michigan is three. I think Washington is four. Based on the amount of talent they have on their teams and the multitude of ways they can beat you.”
He didn’t specify where he would have ranked Florida State had they made the field.
However, he broke down each team’s concern.
For Washington: “Can you play with big-boy football?”
For Texas: “Can your back seven guard anybody?”
“If I’m Alabama, here’s my concern,” he explained. “If they take away the run and they make the quarterback stay in the pocket, can (Jalen Milroe) make enough throws.”
For Michigan: “Which J.J. McCarthy is going to show up?” He added the quarterback was abysmal against Maryland, while looked like an NFL quarterback most of the season.
McFarland picks Texas to win the national championship.
On Sunday, McFarland railed on the committee as soon as it was announced that Alabama was the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 Michigan.
“To me, this is a travesty to the sport because we go out there and play the game,” McFarland said on the broadcast. “Regardless of whether it looks good at quarterback position. Regardless of whether we win with offense, whether we win with defense, the name of the game is to win. There’s a reason that this has never been done. A Power 5 conference going undefeated and not getting into the playoff.
“I understand we want to look at style points, and who are we going to get in the best matchups? That’s not what this is about. This is understanding getting the four best teams. One team has a lost, and that’s Alabama. One team doesn’t, and that’s Florida State. The fact that this committee could take a Power 5 Conference champion that’s undefeated … those kids went out there and busted their behind and not get into the playoff based on the eye test. Mind you, this is the same Alabama team who needed a prayer in Jordan-Hare to beat an Auburn team that lost to New Mexico State.”
