Booger McFarland during Alabama-USF weather delay: ‘Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback’

Booger McFarland made the statement Saturday as No. 10 Alabama was in a lightning delay in Tampa against USF.

“Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback,” the ESPN analyst posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Tide, trailing the Bulls 3-0, had a miserable first quarter before the weather intervened.

South Florida has more first down (4-3) and more total yards (66-53).

McFarland explained during the weather delay what he meant by his comments after Tyler Buchner started 4 of 10 for 25 yards.

“Let’s look at big picture on this,” McFarland said. “Tommy Reese with the OC at Notre Dame. They benched Buchner at Notre Dame. Now, Tommy Rees comes to Alabama. (Jalen) Milroe is starting. They bench Milroe, and open the quarterback competition up and Buchner doesn’t look comfortable.

“The inaccuracies on simple plays. Take the layups. The ability to hit the running back in the flat. Throw the football accurately to (Jermaine) Burton.”

In short, McFarland doesn’t believe the answer is on the roster.

“They don’t have a guy that can do the simple things at Alabama,” McFarland explained. “What I think they should do is run the football. They have a huge offensive line. They average 6-5 and 335. Why are they not running the football? Instead, they are trying to play around the quarterback. Right now, it’s not working.”
