Boise State fires coach Andy Avalos amid 5-5 season
Boise State has fired third-year football coach Andy Avalos, athletics director Jeremiah Dickey announced Sunday.
Avalos was 22-14 as Broncos head coach, including 5-5 this season. The Broncos went 10-4 and won a bowl game in 2022, but were scuffling just to qualify for the postseason this year.
Avalos lost at least four games in each of his three seasons. Boise State predecessors Chris Petersen and Bryan Harsin combined for just two such seasons in 15 years.
“I am grateful for the passion, effort and dedication Andy has given to our community and his alma mater while serving as our head coach,” Dickey said. “Andy will always be a Bronco and we wish him and his family all the best in their next steps.”
Avalos played linebacker at Boise State from 2001-04, and was later an assistant under Petersen and Harsin from 2012-18. He later served as defensive coordinator at Oregon for two seasons under Mario Cristobal, returning to his alma mater as head coach after Harsin left for Auburn in 2020.
Defensive coordinator Spencer Danielson will serve as Boise State’s interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Broncos play at Utah State next Saturday, then host Air Force on Nov. 25.
