Body of missing Tuscaloosa man found in woods; 2 charged with corpse abuse
The body of a missing Tuscaloosa County man has been found, and two people are charged in connection with his death.
Braxton Connell, 35, was last seen about 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the Piggly Wiggly in Alberta. He was supposedly meeting friends to play golf but was never seen or heard from again.
Tuscaloosa police had been searching for Connell since then, said Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy.
The investigation developed a group of individuals and a residence in Coaling where it was believed Connell was last known to have been seen.
During initial interviews with those people, Kennedy said, investigators believed their statements were suspicious, Kennedy said. That’s when the Violent Crimes Unit was brought in.
Late Thursday night, Kennedy said, Connell’s body was found in a wooded area off Highway 216. The cause of death is pending autopsy and examination by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
“Illegal drugs are believed to be a factor in this case,’’ Kennedy said.
Authorities have charged Ricky Duncan, 45, and Bettie Williams, 64, with abuse of corpse. Both are being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
Kennedy said the investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
