Body of female found in burning Birmingham shed

An investigation is underway after remains were found overnight in a burning shed in Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded just before 11 p.m. Wednesday to a fire in a detached shed in the 300 block of 21st Avenue South.

When the blaze was extinguished, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, human remains were found in the debris.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the remains appear to be those of a female. Her race and age could not yet be determined.

She was pronounced dead on the scene at 12 a.m.

Birmingham’s Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, and Birmingham police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the female’s death.
