Body found in Jefferson County woods might be man who fled while being treated after wreck
An investigation is ongoing after a body was found Thursday in an eastern Jefferson County wooded area.
The body is believed to possibly be the remains of a man who was involved in a wreck earlier this week and then fled the scene while he was being checked out by first responders.
Sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said deputies were dispatched at 11 a.m. to the 100 block of Elfreth Johnson Road on the report of a body located in a wooded area.
When they arrived, the met with a group of people who had been searching the area for their missing loved one.
Earlier this week, Money said, a 33-year-old man was involved in a single-vehicle accident on his way home.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating the accident, while the man was being treated by medical personnel.
For unknown reasons, she said, the man fled from the scene and could not be found.
Friends and family members on Thursday searched the area where the man was last seen. It was during that search that they located a body.
Money said the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death, as well as confirm the man’s identity. There was no evidence of foul play, she said.
Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
