An investigation is underway after a body was found inside a vacant apartment in east Jefferson County.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just after noon Monday to the 100 block of 14th Avenue N.E.

Lt. Joni Money said a maintenance worker had entered the apartment and discovered the body, which appeared to be that of an adult male.

According to reports, Money said, the remains are believed to have been at the location for quite some time.

“It is currently undetermined if there is criminal activity associated with this death,’’ Money said.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is working to confirm the identity of the victim as well as determine the cause of death.
