A man fatally stabbed just outside downtown San Francisco early Tuesday morning has been identified as well-known tech executive Bob Lee, the founder of Cash App and the former chief technology officer of Square, according to reports.

Officers with the San Francisco Police Department responded to reports of a stabbing in the city’s Rincon Hill neighborhood around 2:35 a.m., authorities said. When they arrived on the scene they found a 43-year-old man suffering from several “apparent stab wounds.”

“The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries,” San Francisco police said in a press release. “Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to his injuries.”

Police have not yet identified the man killed, but sources have since named Lee as the stabbing victim to NBC Bay Area.

No arrest has been made as of early Wednesday and San Francisco police have not released any suspect details.

Lee had been serving as the chief product officer of MobileCoin — a San Francisco-based cryptocurrency company — since Nov. 2021, according to his LinkedIn page.

“Bob was a force of nature. Helped to birth Android and Cash App into our world,” Joshua Goldbard, the CEO of MobileCoin told ABC7 News. “Moby was his dream: a privacy protecting wallet for the 21st Century. I will miss him every day.”

Lee’s death is being investigated by the San Francisco Police Department Homicide Detail. Anyone with information about the fatal stabbing has been asked to call the police department’s tip line.
