Bob Jones downs Vestavia Hills in MLK Classic girls play at Hoover
Bob Jones used a strong second quarter to earn a 51-48 victory over Vestavia Hills during a Class 7A top 5 matchup in MLK Classic girls basketball at Hoover High School on Monday.
Class 7A fifth-ranked Bob Jones outscored third-ranked Vestavia Hills 17-9, taking a lead it wouldn’t lose midway through the second quarter on the way to a 26-21 halftime advantage.
“Overall I thought we played really solid defense and stuck to our plan,” said Bob Jones coach Jazmine Carr. “Vestavia is a really good team. They made some tough buckets on us, but I thought our next-play mentality was really good.”
Zamyra Goode led the Patriots (21-2) with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
“I thought she got to the rim really well for us and made the right play whether shooting or kicking it out,” Carr said.”She’s a gritty player and gets it done on both ends for us.”
Jae Smith added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks for the Patriots.
Sarah Gordon led Vestavia Hills (22-2) with 21 points and 6 rebounds while Anna Towry added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
In other girls games at Hoover:
Hazel Green 87, Central-Tuscaloosa 30
Class 6A top-ranked Hazel Green scored the first 15 points of the game and cruised to the win over Central-Tuscaloosa.
Hazel Green (22-2) led 49-13 at the half and played its starters sparingly throughout. The Trojans have won 81 straight games over the past three seasons.
Jaden Toney led the attack with 16 points, including 4 3-pointers, while Amiya Redus scored 15 points, Leah Brooks had 13 points and 7 steals and Kristen Johnson scored 13 points with 3 baskets from 3-point range.
Aaliyah Golston scored 18 points to lead Central (16-6).
Clay-Chalkville 53, Lee-Huntsville 46
Clay-Chalkville sprinted to a 32-17 halftime lead then held off Lee-Huntsville for the win.
Lee-Huntsville closed the margin to 36-35 at the end of the third quarter, but couldn’t pull out the victory.
Brooklyn Phillips led the Cougars with 18 points, all 3-pointers. Cheyenne Pearson added 11 points and Kameron Sanders scored nine points.
Jayla Turner scored 15 points to lead Lee-Huntsville and Limiya Batimba added 10 points.
Pelham beat Center Point 53-18.
