Bob Albright, former state House member from north Alabama, dead at 87
Bob Albright, a Democrat who represented north Alabama in Montgomery for 12 years, died Monday, according to his obituary. He was 87.
Albright left “a legacy of public service” beyond his tenure in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1970 to 1982 and serving as an Alabama delegate to the 1984 Democratic National Convention, his obituary said, ranging from helping Huntsville comply with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and speaking to local Scout groups about citizenship and government.
He died peacefully at his home in Florence, his obituary stated.
At the same time he was an elected official, Albright was a coach, biology teacher and career counselor — jobs he held for 25 years.
A native of Paint Rock Valley, in Jackson County, Albright graduated from Central High School and Athens State University.
He attended college on the GI Bill after serving in the Air Force, where he represented the academy in the national Golden Gloves boxing tournament.
Albright continued to remain active after he retired, learning to build engines “and stirring political debate among his peers at their daily breakfast meeting at Hardee’s in Five Points,” his obituary stated.
He was remembered by his family as a masterful storyteller who enjoyed the company of his grandchildren.
Among Albright’s stories were recounting how a boxing opponent lost his glass eye during the bout and sneaking into his grandfather’s wagon to catch a ride to town.
“His family will miss his sense of humor, magnanimous spirit and dedication to equality and justice,” the obituary stated.
Albright was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Joan Hall, and his brother, Ray Albright, who served in the Tennessee State Senate.
He is survived by sons Robert Albright, Jr. and Joseph Albright and daughter Cherise Albright; his nine grandchildren: Jeremy Connell (Katherine), Robert Albright, III, Jack “Spritely” Albright, Ian Albright, Zoe Albright Maddox, Sadie Albright, Sarah Albright, Gus Albright, and Quinn Albright Maddox; brother Mark Albright (Karen); and great grandson Robert James.
