‘Boatercycle,’ a jet ski converted into street vehicle, pulled over by Daphne police

He was sent on his way with just a warning, but a man driving what has been labeled a “boatercycle” — an old model jet ski converted into a street vehicle — drew its share of reactions over the weekend.

The Daphne Police Department posted about the unusual incident on its Facebook page. According to the post, officers responded to a 911 call of a man driving a jet ski on Highway 98.

The odd vehicle was pulled over and checked out, with officers finding it was street legal and had a valid vehicle tag from another state. So they sent him on his way with a warning to get a helmet.

“Sometimes we think we have seen all there is to see,” Daphne police said in the post. “But all of a sudden, there are 9-1-1 calls about a guy driving a jet ski on 98, making us glad we do what we do.”

Unsurprisingly, the post drew a lot of reaction, with more than 1,600 reactions, 2,500 shares and 523 comments, some of which were comedic gold.

“Obviously he’s from out of state,” wrote Cheryl Lynne Staley. “If this was an Alabama resident, he would be towing a cooler behind it.”

“Should have cited him for not wearing his life vest,” wrote Boyd Landas.

“Chances are, he lives in midtown,” wrote Jason King, “and had to build it out of necessity just to get out of his neighborhood whenever it rains.”

Anthony Dobson wondered if the vehicle had “fire extinguisher, flares, whistle?”

Some complained about the 911 calls being a waste of law enforcement resources, but most who reacted seemed to enjoy the absurdity of the situation.
