Bluegrass star Billy Strings returning to Alabama for back-to-back concerts

In a way, Billy Strings is to 2020s bluegrass what Stevie Ray Vaughan was to 1980s blues. A charismatic young singer/guitarist who reinvigorates a roots genre with hard-earned virtuosity and hot live shows.

Today, Strings, a trailer-park prodigy turned Grammy-winner, announced a fall tour and new concert album. The tour finds him returning to Huntsville’s Orion Amphitheater, a venue he and his band performed at last year, for another two-night stand, Oct. 18 and 19.

Tickets for this year’s Orion shows cost $39.50 to $74.50 (plus applicable fees) via the Orion Box Office, address 701 Amphitheater Drive N.W., and axs.com. Public on sale begins 10 a.m. July 14, with a four-ticket limit per buyer per show. Fans can also sign up for presale access through seated.com.

The “Live Vol. 1″ album is due July 12. While the album’s exact contents have yet to be revealed, according to Strings’ Facebook page, there’s a “Guess The Tracklist Contest” coming July 1 with prizes including “tickets for life” Strings’ concerts. (“Full details coming soon.”)

In 2023, Strings and his band — Billy Failing on banjo, Jarrod Walker on mandolin, Royal Masat on bass, Alex Hargreaves on fiddle – made their Orion debut on back-to-back nights during that amphitheater’s second year of operation.

Their expansive ‘23 Orion setlists ranged from originals (“Turmoil & Tinfoil,” “Know It All”) to traditionals (”Come Down the Mountain Katie Daly, “Tom Dooley”) to rock covers (Mother Love Bone’s “Crown of Thorns,” The Moody Blues’ “Night in White Satin”).
