Blount County 5-year-old killed in crash was a ‘precious angel’: Funds sought to help mother

A GoFundMe has been launched for the family of a 5-year-old girl killed in a Blount County crash.

Waydee Edwards, a Locust Fork kindergartner, died Monday in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 79 near Peyton Lane in Blount County. That is about four miles south of Locust Fork.

Authorities said Waydee was a passenger in a GMC Yukon that left the road and struck a ditch before overturned into a creek. It happened at 6:10 a.m.

The girl was unrestrained at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene, said ALEA Senior Trooper Cody Farrar.

The child’s mother, 35-year-old Karley B. Edwards, was not using a seat belt. She was taken to UAB Hospital, but the severity of her injuries has not been released.

“As most of you know there was a tragic accident…leaving a mom with unbearable pain of losing her child,’’ Sheila Abbott wrote in the GoFundMe. “Please continue to pray for Karley, Mylee, family, and friends as we grieve the loss of a precious angel.”

Donations to the GoFundMe can be made here. Abbott said donations can also be made at Locust Fork Elementary.

Blount County Schools Superintendent Rodney Green released this statement following the child’s death:

“The Blount County School family is heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of our students this morning in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the student’s family, friends, and teachers at this most difficult of times. The impact of such a loss cannot be measured. Counseling support and therapy dogs are being provided at Locust Fork Elementary to assist our students and staff during the grieving process. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and the Locust Fork Community.”
