THIS GAME WILL DETERMINE
If UAB can keep the momentum going following an impressive win over Middle Tennessee State last week. The Blazers are 1-1 in league action and can keep their championship hopes alive and well with a victory against Charlotte.
THREE THINGS TO LOOK FOR
1. Under My Thumb. DeWayne McBride is leading the nation in rushing yards per game (160.2) and should have a field day against a Charlotte defense ranked next to last in rushing defense (253.3 ypg). Jermaine Brown Jr. is a perfect complement to McBride and can keep the 49ers guessing when deployed in the backfield.
2. Man On The Moon. Trea Shropshire had a career performance last week and is more valuable than just his stats would indicate. The senior receiver can stretch the field to open the intermediate passing game and keeps opposing defenses honest against the rushing attack. Shropshire is leading the nation in yards per reception (28.6) for a second straight season and looks to stay on track after back-to-back productive outings.
3. You Get What You Give. Charlotte has yet to be shut out this season but stands a good chance of doing so against a UAB defense playing at an elite level. The 49ers’ best chance of scoring points is through the passing game, the running game averaging less than 100 yards per game, but the Blazers are highly adept at demoralizing opposing quarterbacks and taking advantage of mistakes.
KEY MATCHUP
UAB’s secondary vs Charlotte’s passing game: The 49ers’ lone strength comes by way of the passing game, ranking 25th in the nation (286.3 ypg) when led by senior quarterback Chris Reynolds. Meanwhile, UAB is ranked second in pass efficiency defense (93.28) and 13th in passing yards allowed (168.6 ypg) and has collected seven interceptions this season.
