Birmingham’s Vulcan Materials names new president

Thompson S. “Tom” Baker II is the new president of Birmingham’s Vulcan Materials Co.

Previously the company’s chief operating officer, Baker, 65, will report to Chairman and CEO Tom Hill, who also has served as president since 2014.

Baker will lead the company’s strategic initiatives and advise its senior leadership.

The company also announced that Ronnie A. Pruitt, 53, has been elevated to chief operating officer. Pruitt previously served as senior vice president of Vulcan’s southwest and western divisions.

Hill said Baker has “has a deep understanding of the construction materials industry.”

“Vulcan—and particularly our talented management team—will continue to benefit from his valuable expertise and thoughtful leadership in his role as President,” Hill said.

Pruitt will be responsible for driving profitability in all product lines, and continued growth and expansion.

“His industry experience and accomplishments will be integral in driving continued execution of our strategic objectives,” Hill said.

Vulcan is the largest producer of construction aggregates, such as gravel, sand and stone, in the United States.
