Birmingham woman set to ‘Come on down!” on ‘The Price is Right’

Korliss Datcher of Birmingham can teach psychology, coach athletics and offer tips for maximum enjoyment at Disney parks. But can she correctly guess the prices of merchandise (perhaps a car, a refrigerator or a set of living room furniture) and win prizes on TV?

Fans of “The Price Is Right” will find out this week, when Datcher appears on the long-running CBS game show. She’ll be featured on Tuesday’s (Nov. 1) episode, according to a publicist for the series. “The Price Is Right” airs at 10 a.m. CT on weekdays and streams on Paramount+.

According to Datcher’s Facebook page, there’s also a viewing party on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Birmingham’s Avondale Brewing Co., 201 41st St. South.

On “The Price Is Right,” hosted by Drew Carey, contestants are pulled to the stage from the studio audience, competing to win cash and prizes by guessing the prices of merchandise in various games. The show got its start in 1956, was revamped in 1972 and remains popular on daytime TV.

Carey, a comedian, has been the host of “The Price Is Right” since 2007, taking over from the iconic Bob Barker. Among other things, “The Price Is Right” is famous for the catchphrase “Come on down!,” used by the announcer to call specific contestants to the stage.

Episodes of “The Price Is Right” are filmed in advance, and Datcher was in the studio audience for a taping of the show in September, according to her Facebook page.

“The highlight of this trip to LA was my time on The Price is Right!” Datcher said in a Sept. 10 Facebook post. “Be sure to watch on November 1 to see if I had the chance to ‘come on down’!”

Datcher is an athletic director at Advent Episcopal School in Birmingham, as well as its diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging coordinator, according to her LinkedIn profile. She’s also worked as a psychology professor at Lawson State Community College.

In 2016, Datcher was selected as a member of the Disney Moms Parks Panel, offering vacation tips and advice for prospective visitors. Datcher has blogged about Disney parks, encouraging “more Black families and families of color to experience the Disney magic,” according to LinkedIn. She also hosted a podcast, “Your Disney Homegirl.”

There’s no word yet on how Datcher fared on “The Price Is Right.” However, she has experience as a game show contestant, appearing on “Family Feud” with her husband, Kelvin Datcher, and his family in 2012. Kelvin is a senior advisor for special projects for Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin. Korliss and Kelvin Datcher have two children, Zachary and Zoe.

Datcher has talked about her background, family and Disney expertise on “Who’s Zoomin In?,” a YouTube series presented by Birmingham’s Terrific New Theatre.
